"We've got just such an amazing power now to know a lot more about how evolution really occurs and how it changes," she said. ![]() Overall, this type of sophisticated DNA research became possible just ten years ago, when the human genome was published, Snook noted. Human Evolution an "Impenetrable Mystery" Snook, who studies the evolution of sperm form and function, said theories linking simpler genitalia to monogamy are still tenuous.įor instance, a phylogenetic analysis-a study comparing the presence or absence of spiny penises in different organisms over time-would offer more insight. (See "Sperm Recognize 'Brothers,' Team Up for Speed.")īut most women today are monogamous, and the males "are not just present during the competitive act of fertilization-they establish long-term relationships with females," Kingsley said. In some modern animals, such as domestic cats, penile spines help males fertilize females when sperm competition inside the female is fierce.įor instance, the spines can break through copulatory plugs, or coagulated secretions of fluids placed inside the female by other males to prevent different sperm from fertilizing the egg. This may be because men no longer need the additional hardware. Some "might think are marginal," said Snook, who was not involved in the new research.īut these small tweaks "could have potentially really profound effects on the way that organisms evolve from their ancestors."įor instance, such minor genetic shifts have made human penises smoother and simpler over time, according to the study, which appears tomorrow in the journal Nature. To the University of Sheffield's Rhonda Snook, that concept is as interesting as the "titillating" penis findings. That may produce a big effect for that little circuit, but it still preserves lots of other things."Ĭo-author Bejerano emphasized that one of the paper's key messages is that sometimes small changes to DNA sequences can actually lead to larger, more elaborate structures in organisms, such as more complex brains. But "if you just remove an individual switch, altered the response to one particular input. "If you smash the lightbulb, the lights go out," he said. "Think about it as a lightbulb that's controlled by lots of different switches," said study co-author David Kingsley, also of Stanford. The DNA deletions-actually the result of rare cell mutations-do not hinder the overall function of a gene, the study authors noted. In addition to the penile spines, "we think there are probably 500 fascinating other stories out there-that's part of the excitement of this paper," Bejerano said. ( Explore an interactive of the human body.) These deletions have brought about various changes to our bodies, for instance, boosting our brain sizes and stripping our faces of sensory whiskers. In total, the scientists found at least 510 DNA "deletions" that have occurred during human evolution by comparing the human genome with those of a range of modern and extinct species-including chimps and Neanderthals. (See pictures: "'Torture' Phalluses Give Beetles Breeding Boost.") The prehistoric male enhancement existed in the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans, which lived about six million years ago, according to the gene analysis.īut the "penile spine enhancer" code disappeared from human genes before our common ancestor split into modern humans and Neanderthals about 700,000 years ago, said study co-author Gill Bejerano, a developmental biologist at Stanford University in California. Penile spines, which are still present in several modern animals, are usually small barbs of keratin-a type of hard tissue-that line the outside of the organ. Men have lost the DNA code that once made human penises spiny, according to a new analysis of the human genome. ![]() ![]() ![]() The hub and spoke architecture is split into the four subscriptions as seen in the following diagram: As such, all ingress and egress network traffic travels via the hub and this isolates the spoke workloads to only have connectivity via the Hub vNet. Aloha Peppermint White Chocolate Protein Bar ![]() Sounds like nonsense? It surely is, and it has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch.ĭeath Road to Canada is a roguelike, which, like zombies, is far from a novel concept in this day and age. That's the assumption that Death Road to Canada makes when it provides you with a vehicle and sends you on the road to the Canadian border to escape the zombie plague. If you're an American, your destination would be where a zombie apocalypse is unthinkable: Canada. I was definitely afraid. The entertainment industry is still going strong with its numerous depictions of the zombie apocalypse and the urgent question of how to survive. I panicked, repeatedly telling myself this was the end, I was going to die. The music becomes dramatic and menacing, intended to increase your heart rate. If you aren’t carrying a flashlight, forget it. ![]() The most extreme part of the game was exploring the city at night. Since we’re talking about the Nintendo Switch, I’d like to point out that Death Road to Cananda plays fluidly either with the console docked or handheld. Speaking of two player, only the leader can continue through doorways, so make sure you trust your co-op partner. ![]() Another detail that can either be viewed as frustrating or interesting is that player two was only able to rejoin once we came across an NPC and allowed them into our party, but this could happen sooner or later in any given randomly generated story. Visual effects, such as grain, glitch, and scratch, are offered to give the game more of a horror film feeling, but I turned those off in favor of clearer graphics. If using a melee weapon when you become exhausted, you’ll swing much slower. When the character is exhausted, their face will flash red and even begin to drip huge drops of sweat. If you’re bleeding, the zombies will smell you and chase you faster. There are a few neat effects that might easily go overlooked if you aren’t one to focus on detail. There are also trading camps where you can trade food for supplies or gas for food. Down the road, when I wasn’t running out of gasoline or being low on medical supplies, I could choose to camp with other survivors and risk being robbed, or I might run into some bandits that I needed to persuade to let me pass unharmed. I stopped at a gym, hoping to snag large amounts of gasoline out of the toilets, and ended up exercising for an hour to raise my athleticism. I chose where to stop for supplies, which then dictated if I encountered a few hungry zombies or dozens of lazy zombies. The further you travel, the more you learn about yourself and your companions, like composure, morale, and skills. The game plays out with a simplistic RPG style story-telling, with multiple choice options for the feel of a choose-your-own-path novel. With the characters chosen, it was time to begin my trek to Canada. In two player, role options are available, such as leader or follower, and second player can be a random or saved character. During the game play you collect Zombie Points to level up the skills that are offered and applied to any character given that trait. The character you make can also be saved and used for later. There are 80 slots provided for saving these characters! Then I moved on to perks and was offered a wide variety, from Mechanic to Gun Collector. I could change their face type, hair, skin color, hair color, clothes and height. However, I was still surprised by the amount of options provided. ![]() In fact, I had a difficult time telling the difference between female and male. Keep in mind this game is specifically designed to appear in 16 bit graphics, so not many details were offered about the character’s features. First and foremost I decided to check out character creation. The background music throughout most of the game was light and whimsical, which added irony. I was greeted on the “Start” screen by some old fashioned country rock music. Then again, that’s probably because the story is completely randomly generated, unexpected, and usually hilarious. Starting up the game I knew next to nothing about the journey in which I was about to embark. After watching the preview for this game, I immediately knew Death Road to Canada was going to be addicting and easy. We all form an opinion of a game based on a few seconds of video, whether it’s of game play or a cutscene. ![]() The online gallery specialises in prints for discerning collectors of unique, previously unseen signed limited edition art. With “ SafeinCloud” and “ LastPass” on Android? I wish I could use LastPass on my Android tablet.Īnybody else wants to share their experience Never had a problem with any device and chose LastPass for it’s compatibility with Yubi Key. Currently using Samsung Galaxy S5 phone and Tab 4 Tablet. I’ve used LastPass for years on multiple Android phones and tablets including my Color Nook which I set up with a dual boot ICS android option. I am also the creator of chromeIPass and passIFox for those that use it (although I neglect those pretty badly). Oh, and a random bit of trivia, KeepShare isn’t my only security-related piece of software (nor is it my only KeePass-related). Neither one individually can unlock your passwords. In order to unlock the database, you must have access to your Google Drive for some app-private data, and the PIN. PIN unlock is also secure as it is used in a form of 2FA. Most people don’t even want write support. On top of this, nothing’s stopping you from using KeePassDroid and/or Keepass2Android for all your writing needs I’ve just put a lot more effort and thought into how the UI should work vis-a-vis the others. If you wanted to not pay, you can build it yourself. KeepShare, like the other two is also fully open source. It does everything else the paid version does. The Lite version is crippled? No, it’s read-only. Yes, AUTO-FILL.Īuto-fill of usernames and passwords works across all apps, chrome and the built-in web browser (for those of you not using chrome, but no other browser support). Namely, a secure PIN unlock mechanism, and auto-fill. To clarify on KeepShare, since you don’t know anything about it: it adds usability and features that KeePassDroid and Keepass2Android both lack. ![]() OTOH, there’s a companion app to KPD that allows you to open it via a NFC tag (assuming your device is NFC-enabled) and thus avoid having to wrestle with a entering a complicated master password. That might give K2A an edge, because it has a quick-reopen feature that allows you to use a shorter password to reopen the db if you’ve already opened it (with the full password) recently. ![]() KPD accesses the local copy of your db, and the cloud provider’s app keeps it in sync with the cloud.īear in mind that if you use a strong master password to open your KeePass db, that can be a hassle on your mobile, where keyboards are harder to use. KPD only opens a local db, though you can use it with gdrive or dropbox if you install one of those apps on your android device and sync a folder on your device to the cloud. (Of course, this assumes you have a cloud account.) OTOH, that’s a slower way of getting at your stored passwords. The latter can be used even if you haven’t installed the cloud provider’s android app, because it accesses the cloud directly. K2A comes in two flavors–one version that only opens a local db and another that will directly open cloud dbs, such as a KeePass db stored in gdrive or dropbox. It’s a little less convenient, though supposedly prevents the possibility of other apps snooping on the cut/paste operation without your knowledge. K2A instead copies the credentials to its own, secure keyboard, so when you open your web browser it takes a few more steps to select the keyboard and then select the username/password to paste. With KPD you open the database and select an entry, and it copies the username and password to the android notification shade, where you can then copy/paste into websites or password entry boxes in other apps. OTOH, that may be because Keepass2Android is arguably a little more secure. I’ve tried both of the others and they are quite similar, though I find KeePassDroid easier to use. ![]() (There is a crippled, “Lite” version, but why bother with crippled when the other two are free and work quite well?) I know nothing about KeepShare other than it costs money. AFAIK, there are only three real choices of android apps that are compatible with KeePass PC databases: KeePassDroid, Keepass2Android, and KeepShare. ![]()
